Comparative Study in the Design of Reinforced Concrete Footings

Title: Comparative Study in the Design of Reinforced Concrete Footings
   Author        : Mariana Nabil Ibrahim

Abstract:
The structure loads are transmitted to the underlying soil strata through a suitably designed foundation. Therefore, the foundation of a structure is considered the most crucial structural element amongst all structural elements. The foundation may be classified in to two main categories, shallow and deep foundations. Shallow foundation comprises isolated footings, reinforced concrete raft foundation, and combined footings. The research study presented in this thesis is concerned with isolated footings. The design of isolated column footings is completed through, geotechnical and structural design. Geotechnical design is the responsibility of geotechnical engineer, while structural design is the responsibility of structure engineer, so, the input research into isolated column footings comes from two different disciplines, geotechnical and structure. This may be one of the causes that attributed to limited research input to the subject. The research presented in this thesis highlighted the importance of the structural design of the isolated column footings, which is based on empirical rules, in nature. Furthermore, calculations of bending moments and shearing forces induced in footings are based on the rules of beams theory.
