Abstract:
A brain tumor is a growth of abnormal cells in the brain. The selection of the treatment method depends on many different factors such as the type of brain tumor, its size and its location. Cancerous tumors are controlled or eliminated by irradiating the area which contains the tumor.
The treatment method considered in this thesis has a highly selectivity to the tumor cell to destroy it and a minor damaged to the normal cells. The produced Alpha particle and Lithium ion are charged, relatively heavy and having high energy. They lose their energy within the cell diameter region causing ionization and damage to the tumor cells by the absorbed energy.
The objective of this study is to understand the behavior of the phenomena of the energy deposition and its relation to the transport of the neutrons through the brain and to get the optimum conditions for the irradiation process.
Monte Carlo code MCNP5 is used to calculate the absorbed doses and fluxes cased by of the neutrons and gamma photons. The main factor effecting the irradiation process are the tumor position, the tumor size, injected boron concentration and the energy of the incident neutron beam. Each of these factors is studied separately. A simplified geometry and composition of the irradiated media are chosen to allow the understanding of the behavior of the transport process of the considered particles and media while to present simple cases where experiments can be designed to verify the obtained conclusions and results. Water is selected to simulate the brain tissue and parallelepiped phantom to represent the brain. a uniform beam of monoenergatic neutrons having the same diameter as the brain is considered.
