Study of the characteristics of Photovoltaic Modules under Different Environmental Conditions

Title: Study of the characteristics of Photovoltaic Modules under Different Environmental Conditions

Abstract:
Solar energy has emerged as a renewable, clean, reliable and free source of energy encapsulated in photovoltaic (PV) cells. Studying the factors and parameters that affect the performance of these cells is significantly important to enhance the design, development and optimization of their use. PV module temperature is dependent on the intensity of the incident solar radiation, thermal properties of the semiconductor material used in the module and the net module output power. Only part of the incident solar spectrum is converted into electrical energy, while the rest is converted into thermal energy (heat). This generated heat causes the increase of the module temperature, which consequently leads to decrease the module efficiency as well as the output power when operated at environmental conditions that differ from the design environmental conditions.
This study investigated experimentally and theoretically the effects of ambient air temperature on performance of thin film photovoltaic (PV) panel under real outdoor conditions at Borg Al-Arab-Alex-Egypt. In addition, the theoretical study is carried out to investigate the characteristics and performances of the monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar panels using PSIM simulation package. Through the theoretical study prediction of the performance of different PV panel technologies (thin film, monocrystalline and polycrystalline) at various metrological conditions at different locations inside Egypt (Alexandria, Cairo, Assiut and Aswan).
In addition, the effect of PV panels output as a DC source to the inverter was investigated theoretically at different power factor loads on the output voltage and current waveforms.
