Abstract:
The
current research examines the effect of pile spacing on pile group behavior.
Non-linear elasto-plastic numerical simulation of the pile group is used
utilizing the software package Simulia/Abaqus using Mohr-Coulomb constitutive
model. Verification of numerical modelling by regenerating in-situ
load-displacement relation for two driven pile load tests performed at a
Shanghai site. The result of the numerical simulation fits well with the field
load test. Moreover, sensitivity analysis on the effect of lateral boundary
distance and element size on the computational results of numerical pile test
is discussed. A parametric study on the effect of different pile spacings for
two-pile group, four-pile group and infinite raft on piles configurations for
three soil profiles is performed namely, uniform clay, uniform sand and clay over
sand profiles. Group efficiency and group settlement ratio were calculated for
the different pile spacings and different configurations.
Pile group efficiency is defined as the ratio of
the pile capacity in a group to the single pile capacity evaluated at a certain
strain level and the strain level is defined as the pile settlement normalized
by the pile diameter. Group settlement ratio is defined as the ratio of the
pile group settlement to the single pile settlement at the working load.
Results show that, pile group efficiency decreases and group settlement ratio
increases as the spacing between piles decrease.
