Abstract:
Cryptography is probably the most important aspect of communication security and is becoming increasingly important as a basic building block for computer security. Encryptions in common use are: conventional or symmetric encryption, and public-key or asymmetric encryption. This thesis provides a survey of the basic principles of both symmetric and asymmetric encryption, looking at widely used algorithms, showing applications of symmetric cryptography and introduces the principles of modern cryptography, with an emphasis on the most widely used encryption techniques(DES),(AES),(RSA), and Diffie –Hellman.
The last decade used encryption evolution of several applications like military image databases, confidential video conferencing, medical imaging, cable TV, online personal photograph albums, etc., which require reliable, fast and robust security systems to store and transmit digital images. Encryption of images is different from that of texts due to some intrinsic features of images such as bulk data capacity, high correlation among pixels and high redundancy, which are generally difficult to handle by traditional methods.
In recent years, encryption plays a crucial role in protecting information, and most notably in securing on-line purchases from attack. For the small business, encryption also plays an important role as a last line of defense against intruders and data thieves. RSA is a great answer to that. The NBS (National Bureau of Standards) standard could be useful only if it was a faster algorithm than RSA, where RSA would only be used to securely transmit the keys. Thus, an efficient computing method of decryption must be found, so as to make RSA completely stand-alone and reliable. For RSA to be reliable, it would have to use simple arithmetic, which is easier to compute on a general-purpose computer than are bit manipulations, where better hardware is used, where perhaps NBS would be better.
One of important application of RSA is image encryption. If user has created an electronic image at some effort and expense, and wants to make it available on a communication network. When unauthorized copies or forgeries of the image appear
In this study, the code has been implemented on MATLAB to simulate the algorithm of RSA. RSA algorithm has been applied on digital images and also shows difference in output image or cipher image when key length becomes shorter or longer. In addition, image encryption using DES and BLOWFISH has been performed to compare the results between both and the RSA case. And some of the security analyses, which include the most important ones like statistical analysis and differential analysis, on the results from the proposed approach are described.
