Hazardous Areas Classification and Electrical Equipment in Oil and Gas Industries

Title: Hazardous Areas Classification and Electrical Equipment in Oil and Gas Industries
Author        : Ahmed El-Saghier Ali
Collection   : M.Sc. Electric
Abstract:
It is a fact that gases, vapors and mists escape during the production, processing, transportation and storage of flammable materials in the chemical and petrochemical industries, as well as in the production of mineral oil, natural gas and in many other sectors.
These flammable gases, vapours, mists and dusts, form an explosive atmosphere with the oxygen of the air. In the case that this atmosphere is ignited, explosions take place which can result in severe harm to human life and property.
So hazardous areas classification and the selection of the electrical equipment to be used in these hazardous areas safely is one of the most dangerous issues that face the oil &gas industry.
The main issue of this report is to understand the hazards involved in using electrical equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres and the used criteria to classify the hazardous areas in addition to the selection of explosion-protected electrical apparatus, describing how protection is achieved and maintained in line with these international requirements. It is based on the newly adopted international IEC 79 Series of Standards that are now replacing the older national standards and are directly applicable to most countries in the world (including North America).
Also in this report an actual company for natural gas liquefaction (ELNG) is considered as a case study to show the area classification and the used criteria to select the electrical equipment in hazardous areas with examples and introduce Lesson Learn from Oil & Gas Platforms Disasters.
