Abstract:
A
ridged foil journal bearing having a finite length and lubricated with an
incompressible fluid was analytically investigated in order to understand and
quantify its behavior. Film rupture has been accounted for by employing
swift-stieber boundary conditions. The governing equations were numerically
solved for a length to diameter ratio of unity. The equation is solved by using
finite difference technique. The charts are presented for the acn-dimensional
pressure at the median plane and for the effect of changing eccentricity on the
pressure distribution. A comparison has been made between foil bearing and
journal bearing to clarify the differences between them. At the same e the
charts illustrate that the positive pressure occupies a larger portion of the
bearing circumference in the foil bearing than the journal bearing and the
angular location of minimum film thickness increases from 200’ in journal
bearing to 250’ in foil bearing. This property is advantageous from the
standpoint of bearing stability. The bearing load for the foil bearing is less
than that for journal bearing.
