Title: Blind Signal to Noise Ratio Estimation in General Fading Environments

 Abstract
Signal-to -noise-ratio (SNR) is an important parameter that is used in most of the communication systems. A blind SNR estimator that uses Higher order statistics (HaS) of the received signal is proposed. Although this envelope based non-data-aided estimator has been derived for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFD:NI) signals, it works for any time domain Gaussian distributed signals as well. A closed form for the estimator, that is a function of the moments of the received signal and the Nakagami¬m parameter, is derived. Interestingly, the obtained form shows that the proposed estimator is independent of the constellation of the signal. Furthermore, a general mathematical form is given for the even moments of the received signal in terms of SNR and Nakagami-rn parameter. An extension to multiple antennas configurations is provided, as well. The performance of proposed estimator is evaluated based on the mean squared error under different conditions of the channel. Our results reveal that the proposed estimator works better in bad fading conditions and spans the typical range of concern for communication systems.
