Title: Cold Asphaltic Mixtures Using Recycled Asphalt Pavement

 Abstract:
Recycling of highway construction materials, such as milled asphalt concrete, makes sound economic, environmental, and engineering sense. In addition to preserving the non¬renewable materials and conserving natural resources, it might be a cost-saving measure by provision funds for additional projects. Cold asphalt mixtures have many advantages when compared to hot asphaltic mixtures, including a lower level of harmful emissions, energy saving due to construction at lower temperatures, modest construction equipment, and a higher level of safety during construction. Cold recycling of asphalt concrete technology provides the merits of both cold mix and recycling. However, cold recycling, and recycling of asphalt concrete in general, is not widely used in Egypt due to a number of reasons including well documented issues with cold mixes such as the lack of gaining early strength, the high percentage of air voids in asphaltic mixture and the lower stability values as compared to hot asphaltic mixtures.
The main objectives of this project are to investigate the behavior of cold recycled asphalt mixtures at varying levels of Asphalt Emulsion Residue Content and varying levels of recycle materials; to investigate of the effect of curing methods on the stability of the asphalt mixtures; and to identify the cost effectiveness of using cold recycled asphalt concrete mixes.
Test results showed that using recycled pavement material in cold asphalt mixtures gives adequate engineering properties satisfying the requirements of low to moderate trafficked roads. However, the results showed the high sensitivity of cold mixtures for water action. The most important conclusion is that the best time for executing cold mixtures is the summer and the spring. Moreover, using recycled asphalt pavement in the cold asphaltic mixtures in a percentage of 40 might result in material cost savings of up to an estimated 9.
