Title :
Conceptual Design of
Cobalt-60 Food Irradiation
:Abstract
This thesis deals with irradiation
technologies and their various applications in food processing for better
benefits in terms of food preservation, trade and safety. Design parameters and
calculations of Co-60 irradiation facility are described for potential
utilization in Mali to reduce post-agricultural losses in some products.
The irradiation technologies
presented are gamma radiation, electron beam and X-rays irradiators, their
categorization and some of their advantages and design features.
The applications described comprise
high-dose applications such sterilization of food (meat, seafood), treatment of
dry spices; and low-dose applications such radurization (use of radiation to
extend product life by reducing the microbial population, delay ripening,
etc.), radicidation (use of radiation to eliminate some pathogenic bacteria in
non-sterilized food), insect disinfestation, etc.). Indeed to accomplish a
specific treatment a required dose values must be applied and adequate
dosimeters and dosimetry systems are to be selected.
The design part of the thesis focuses
on the determination of the source intensity of a category IV type of Co-60
facility to be potentially used to treat agricultural products in Mali such
mango, potato, tomato, etc. Much of this part deals with shielding calculations
of the radiatin source (water storage) and concrete shielding of radiation room
(biological shield) using Monte Carlo Neutral Particle code (MCNP). The results
of these calculations are discussed in detail.
Finally, some additional information
is provided with regard to measures of radiation protection safety and security
of radiation sources to meet the requirements of international/national
standards and regulations.
